Clinical Analysis of Atrial Septal Defect

Abstract
48 cases of atrial septal defect were operated from May, 1982 to April, 1986.
Clinical analysis of these cases were as follows;
1. Sex ratio, male: female, was 25:23.
2. Mean age at operation was 15.2¡¾9.3 years. The youngest patient was 4 years and the oldest one was 44 years.
3. The most common symptom was exertional dispense(72.9%).
4. Systolic murmur could be heard at the 2nd or 3rd intercostal space on . the left sternal border in 47 cases(97.9%).
5. Electrocardiographic findings were normal sinus rhythm . in 42 cases (87.5%).
6. Cardiac catheterization was performed in all cases. The mean value of the results were: Systolic pulmonary artery pressure=33.0¡¾14.6mmHg, Qp/Qs=2.3¡¾0.4, Rp/Rs=0.062¡¾0.061.
7. All cases were operated under the direct vision with cardiopulmonary bypass. All cases were repaired with patch.
8. Postoperative complications were occurred in 6 cases(12.5%), and they were wound infection, bleeding, heart failure, anemia and pulmonary edema.
9. One case died due to complication of anticoagulation therapy postoperatively, so, hospital mortality was 2.1%.
